Users of the Homey Pro ($399) smart home hub (2023 release) will be happy to hear that the manufacturer has released a software update that activates its previously dormant Thread radio, enabling Matter-over-Thread devices to establish direct connections with hub without need of a Thread Border Router.
The update promises make the Homey Pro one of the most complete smart home hubs on the market, capable of controlling devices over Wi-Fi (2.4-/5GHz), Zigbee, Z-Wave, 433MHz RF, infrared, Bluetooth Low Energy, Matter-over-Wi-Fi, and now Matter-over-Thread.
While the Homey Pro could previously control Matter-over-Thread device, it depended on the presence of a Thread border router in the home. The Homey Pro processes all commands locally, independent of an internet connection. It can be hardwired to your home’s router with an optional Home Pro Ethernet Adapter ($29).
The Homey Pro, and its simpler cousin, the Homey Bridge, can also control air conditioners that have infrared receivers. This feature is currently in beta, however, and is limited to a few brands of air conditioners, including LG and Mitsubishi. The infrared blaster on Athom’s hubs can also control TVs, hi-fi equipment, and similar components.
