Is Your Website Using HTTPS? Why the Padlock Matters More Than You Think
That little padlock icon in your browser bar is more important than most business owners realise. HTTPS means your website encrypts all data between your visitor’s browser and your server. Without it, anyone on the same network can intercept passwords, form submissions, and payment details.
What happens without HTTPS
Google marks your site as “Not Secure” in Chrome. Visitors see a warning before entering your site. Your search rankings drop — Google has used HTTPS as a ranking factor since 2014. And if you collect any personal data (even a contact form), you’re potentially breaking data protection laws.
How to check
Look at your website URL in the browser. If it starts with https:// and shows a padlock, you are secure. If it shows “Not Secure” or starts with http://, you need to fix this immediately.
How to get HTTPS
Most hosting providers offer free SSL certificates through Let’s Encrypt. Log into your hosting control panel, look for SSL/TLS settings, and enable it. If you are not sure how, ask your hosting provider — it is usually a one-click setup. After enabling, make sure your site redirects all HTTP traffic to HTTPS.
