Short answer: almost certainly yes. If you use AI tools that process personal data from UK residents, you need to register with the ICO. It costs £40 per year for most small businesses.
When registration is required
You process personal data as a data controller. Your chatbot collects names, emails, or conversation data. Your analytics tools track user behaviour. Your email marketing tool stores subscriber information.
What counts as personal data in AI context
Chat transcripts. Email addresses. IP addresses (yes, even hashed ones). Behavioural data used for personalisation. Anything that could identify an individual directly or indirectly.
How to register
Visit ico.org.uk/registration. Complete the self-assessment. Pay £40/year (for organisations with turnover under £632,000 and fewer than 10 staff — otherwise £60 or £2,900).
